Itinerary

Day 1, Wed. BOARD YOUR OVERNIGHT TRANSPACIFIC FLIGHT.

Day 2, Thu. ARRIVE HO CHI MINH CITY, VIETNAM.
Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. This evening is free.

Day 3, Fri. HO CHI MINH CITY.
Your full day tour visits the main sites. See Notre Dame Cathedral, the Jade Emperor Pagoda, the Opera House, Reunification Palace, and the War Remnants Museum. Then head out to the Cu Chi Tunnels, an important base during the Vietnam War. Your evening is free. (B,L)

Day 4, Sat. HO CHI MINH CITY / EMBARK CRUISE.
Travel to My Tho, the hub of the Mekong Delta, and board your river ship. This afternoon, moor near Cai Be and make a trip by traditional junk to Vinh Long and Tien Giang. Explore the local islands and visit An Kiet House, the former mandarin’s residence, where the surviving members of the Kiet family welcome you. Return to your ship, visiting the boatyards of Dong Hoa Hiep Island on the way. (B,L,D)

Day 5, Sun. CAI BE / CHAU DOC.
Begin the day with a visit to the floating market of Cai Be. There is also time to see the French Gothic Cathedral and the port area with its colonial buildings and pretty gardens. Watch the local merchants make coconut candy and rice paper. This afternoon, continue cruising up the Mekong to Chau Doc. (B,L,D)

Day 6, Mon. CHAU DOC / CRUISING.
By local ferry, travel down the canals and backwaters of the main Mekong Channel to a Cham tribal village. Take a rickshaw ride through the village and visit a catfish farm. This afternoon, continue cruising and cross the border into Cambodia. (B,L,D)

Day 7, Tue. PHNOM PENH.
Spend most of the day in Cambodia’s capital, a city whose French colonial past is still much in evidence. See many of the Wats (temples), the most spectacular being the Silver Pagoda located at the Royal Palace. Another highlight is the National Museum, with its outstanding display of Khmer crafts. This afternoon you can continue exploring the city on your own or take an excursion to the Killing Fields and the Khmer Rouge detention center. Tonight, you may want to dine ashore (additional expense) and try out one of the capital’s many restaurants and watering holes. (B,L,D)

Day 8, Wed. PHNOM PENH / KAMPONG CHAM.
Your first port of call this morning is Chong Koh, a little known silk weaving village. Then continue upstream with an afternoon stop at the town of Peam Chi Kang to visit its monastery and school. (B,L,D)

Day 9, Thu. KAMPONG CHAM AREA.
Enjoy a morning journey upriver to the hilltop 8th century Wat Hanchey, whose ancient brick structure characterizes the architecture of the Chenla Empire, predating the glory days of Angkor. This afternoon, travel by coach to the 12th-century Angkorian temple of Wat Nokor. Also visit the twin holy mountains of Phnom Pros (Men’s) and Phnom Srei (Women’s) Hills with their ornate temples and gates. (B,L,D)

Day 10, Fri. TONLE RIVER / KAMPONG CHHNANG.
This morning enter the waters of the Tonle River. Relax on deck as the ship winds its way through the jungle and the river narrows. This is the perfect opportunity for an up close image of the rich tapestry of river village life. Upon arrival in the city of Kampong Chhnang, explore this busy rural port and its bustling markets. Later board a launch for an excursion to seek out the array of birdlife and to watch the local fishermen in their little boats. (B,L,D)

Day 11, Sat. TONLE LAKE / SIEM REAP.
Board a hydrofoil and cross Tonle Sap (Lake). Birdlife is abundant, and there is a stillness and tranquility as your cruise past floating fishing villages. Later this afternoon meet your private guide for a walking tour of the fabulous temples of Angkor Wat. (B)

Day 12, Sun. ANGKOR WAT EXCURSION.
Visit Angkor Thom, the walled Royal City. Continue on for a stop at Ta Prohm on the drive back to Siem Reap, where your evening is free. (B,L)

After breakfast at the hotel, transfer to the airport for your flight to Bangkok. Upon arrival, you are met and taken on an afternoon tour including the Grand Palace and the Wat Phra Kaeo, housing the Emerald Buddha. (B)

Day 14, Tue. BANGKOK.
Your day is free for independent sightseeing. Choose from an array of optional excursions including a klong (canal) tour, rice barge cruise, a visit to the floating markets, or a Thai dinner and cultural show. (All own expense; these tours should be arranged at the time of booking, see page 31.) (B)
